Live BRAVE Today
There is a life beyond holding it together.
For first responders, families, and anyone carrying more than they know how to say. Live BRAVE brings personal stories and practical tools to the work of moving forward.
Created by Rob Z Christensen, author and fire-service veteran.
The story behind BRAVE
Before BRAVE was a framework, it was personal.
Rob spent more than three decades responding to other people’s emergencies. Yet in BRAVE, he describes a different kind of fear: walking into his first counseling appointment.
The firefighter who could enter a burning building was afraid of being seen as someone who needed help.
With professional support and people who stayed beside him, he began learning to offer himself the care he had spent years giving others. That work became the foundation of BRAVE.
An Act of Service
Rob lets the camera into that work. Not as a finished success story, but as someone still finding his way.
A film by Brandon Kapelow. Rob’s recovery was featured by The New York Times in the documentary An Act of Service.
Content noteIncludes discussion of trauma, suicide, and mental health treatment.
Watch on YouTubeA different kind of strength
Your life may look different. The weight may feel familiar.
Maybe you’re the one people call when things go wrong. Maybe you’re starting over after a loss. Or perhaps you’ve become so used to saying “I’m fine” that you rarely stop to ask what you need.
You do not need to have Rob’s story to find something here for yours.
“Most of us learn to carry, not to unpack.”
The BRAVE Framework
BRAVE is not a personality trait. It’s a way forward.
Five practices for meeting hard moments with more intention, and meeting yourself and others with more care.
Bravery
Take the honest next step, even when fear is still there.
Resilience
Adapt to what has changed. Build forward, rather than forcing life back to what it was.
Authenticity
Let your choices reflect what matters to you, not only what others expect.
Vulnerability
Share what is real with people who have earned your trust. You choose what to share and when.
Empathy
Listen before trying to fix. Offer yourself the care you would give someone you love.

BRAVE: Rise Stronger After Life’s Hardest MomentsRob Z Christensen
At ten, Rob stood frozen as a telephone rang in a home that did not feel safe. Years later, in a firefighter’s uniform, he found himself unable to speak on a medical call.
BRAVE connects those moments with the people and practices that helped him move forward. Through personal stories, reflections, and practical exercises, Rob invites you to consider what you’ve been carrying and how you want to live next.
